Yuletide Letter 2026
Oct. 13th, 2026 08:08 amI'm thrilled that you like my requested fandoms and characters enough to offer to write them -- honestly, I'm thrilled you know who/what my requested characters ARE -- and I can't wait to read whatever you come up with! The prompts are there as optional jumping-off points I've collected while musing year-round over my rare fandoms, but if you have a different idea for these characters that you want to write or the story takes you in a different direction, feel free to do that instead. Really I just need more fic for these characters to exist in the universe; the rest is a bonus.
(Some of the fandom sections turned out longer than others, but this is primarily a reflection of the length and complexity of the available canon for those characters, and not of how much I want fic for them. How much I want fic for them is, in each case, A LOT.)
I have gifting enabled on my account and am always delighted to receive treats of any length, including art and poetry treats :)
( General likes and DNWs )
( Never Eaten Vegetables: Luwa )
( Elis James and John Robins (Podcast): John, Elis )
( Dragaera: Morrolan e'Drien )
Thank you for writing for me! I hope you have a lovely Yuletide!

LAST CALL for beta update and inbox page
Oct. 6th, 2026 01:37 amIt's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.
We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!
To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.
If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.
Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.
Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!
Code pushed -- FYI
Oct. 3rd, 2026 10:20 amHi all,
I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)
This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)
Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!
LJ Idol 20th Anniversary: Vampire Load
Oct. 3rd, 2026 08:35 amYoungest SIL's husband has ALS. We haven't seen him since January. The only reason why he’d made an appearance was because he was still mobile with the walker. He's in a motorized wheelchair now. They had to sell their house because the doorways were too narrow to accommodate the wheelchair as well as his other medical accoutrements.
Their older son abandoned his fledgling career to try out for a NHL farm team even though he did most of the literal heavy lifting caring for his father. This news from MIL sounded weird until we remembered that BIL’s unrealized lifelong dream was to play professional hockey.
Their daughter is a nurse and refuses to visit because she doesn’t want to see her father *like that*. She sees enough of it at work.
Their younger son is a college junior. He wants to be a professional hockey player but his numerous injuries over the years have probably backfired that dream.
Youngest SIL refuses to talk to anyone in the family save her mother because she neither wants questions nor advice, and especially not pity. MIL tells us SIL is petrified she won’t be able to work at some point. She drives her husband and MIL to Mass every Sunday in the specially equipped van. MIL becomes upset whenever the priest pays more attention to BIL than her.
MIL has never been adept at dealing with her adult children's emotions so whatever Youngest SIL tells her is automatically passed to the other adult children in varying degrees of Such a shame while clicking her tongue against her teeth and shaking her head. She once confided to me that she has no idea how to respond to SIL.
She just wants you to listen.
I can’t handle this.
You have to. You’re her mother. Who else would she turn to?
Nobody can predict how long BIL will remain on this mortal plain because ALS has its own timetable. There will be a day, though, where he will be bedridden, barely able to speak, much less breathe with the ventilator. At some point the ventilator won't be enough to sustain him.
SIL hears the ventilator’s quiet, whooshy exhale as she nears the bedroom. She peeks in, then quietly approaches the bed as the ventilator whispers a soft inhale.
He’s asleep. Oh thank god!
She draws a deep breath, her shoulders releasing, then collapsing.
Tears puddle her eyes as she darts into the kitchen before sobbing. She picks up her phone and taps a number.
I don’t know how much longer I can hang on, Ma. I don’t know. I feel like I’m going crazy. I have to do everything by myself now, and that includes mowing the lawn and trimming the bushes in the front yard because I can’t hire anybody to do them because what if they see him? Then what? When I take both of you to Mass every Sunday I pray that God will take care of him, of me, of us. I pray that I can do everything expected of me because I am his wife.
You need to pray for hope because hope is the only thing you can hang onto.
How can I pray for hope, Ma? He’s going to die from this at some point. There’s no cure. How can I have hope?
You have to have hope. Hope is what you live for.
That doesn’t make any sense! How can you say that? How can you? Are you going to be praying for hope when you’re on your deathbed?
We want to call Youngest SIL because we’re concerned. We know what it’s like taking care of a loved one, thanks to my mother who didn’t have ALS (she’d call it Lou Gehrig’s Disease) but whose intellect gradually vanished into the stratosphere. My husband is the only other local adult child.
If Youngest SIL sees our numbers pop up on her phone, she lets us go to voice mail.
We knock on the door at the new house and there’s no response.
My husband asks his mother how SIL is doing.
The same. Always the same. I don’t know what else to say. Did you happen to catch the Bruins game?
